Maintain the traditional charm of your property with our Sliding Sash windows. Despite what you may have heard, Sliding Sash windows don’t have to be drafty and difficult to care for. ERG’s Sliding Sash windows are strong and practical, while delivering an authentic timber look. With a vertical opening, you can open the window anything from an inch to half the window’s height, so you can decide on the amount of fresh air you let in.

Perfectly suited to Scottish homes looking to bring a period charm to their home through their windows, our sash windows are the perfect choice for a variety of property styles including townhouses, Victorian homes and new builds.

UPVC Sash Windows

Our vertical sliding window includes two sashes that slide upwards or downwards, as needed.

Traditionally made from timber, our UPVC and aluminium substitutes are able to provide the same traditional appeal and styling as timber. Our alternatives are also low maintenance and thermally efficient so you can get the look of timber but with added benefits.

Glazing comes in many different forms…

As soon as that front door shuts and you enter your home, you understandably expect a little bit of privacy, Our privacy glazing blurs the inside of your house from the outside, which can provide you with much-needed privacy when you want it most. LEARN ABOUT OUR SLIDING SASH WINDOWS

Our range of sliding sash windows combines the best of modern glazing with the traditional charm of sash frames. If you’re considering replacing your existing sash windows or upgrading your windows with ERG Scotland we expect you to have some questions. We’ve answered some common sliding sash window questions below, but if you can’t find an answer below or want a personalised quote contact our window design today for advice.

What are sliding sash windows?

Admired and adored for close to 500 years.

There is much dispute over the origins of the sliding sash window. Some claim that it derives from Holland, whilst others vehemently argue that it was first developed in France.

While we can’t give you a conclusive tracing of its beginnings, we do know that it’s existed since the end of the 16th Century and has vertically opening windows consisting of two framed window sashes, one positioned in front of the other.

These window units sit in frames with vertical grooves and it’s these grooves and the counterbalances e.g., cords and pulleys, that enable the frames to smoothly move up and down without pressing against each other.

How do you open sliding sash windows?

Opening a sliding sash window is easy work.

One of ERG’S window advisors can demonstrate how to open a sliding sash window in our Invergordon showroom, where we have the product displayed.

The window catch needs to be unlocked first, located on top of the sash, so that it’s in an open position.

Use the lift hooks to slide the bottom sash upwards. If there is a tilt facility, push the tilt buttons on the top of the bottom sash to make the window tilt inwards.

The top sash can be slid downwards using the D handle or ring pull and tilted inwards too once the bottom sash is tilted.

There are tilt catches on the top of the sash and they both need sliding simultaneously towards the middle of the sash so that the top sash can be tilted inwards.

How can I customise my sliding sash windows?

Fully customise our sliding sash windows.

We want you to get sliding sash windows that look exactly how you want them to, and so are happy to let you customise their design, inside and out.

Tailor them to your home, beginning with the choosing of a window style to suit the kind of property you own, and then select a window material.

The windows also need configuring. You could stick with a like-for-like configuration or shift to a different window arrangement (functional preferences will decide this) if you fancy a change of shape.

For some, colour is the most important customisable element of all.

Our broad colour spectrum features muted and vibrant finishes, and you can request a dual-coloured window to contrast the internal and external sides of the frames.

From colour, move on to the glazing, which is where things like energy efficiency, privacy, and security come into the equation.

And the final thing is to furnish the windows with furniture – handles, locks, hinges etc.

Are sliding sash windows suitable for conservation homes?

Accepted by planners in many conservation areas.

Guidelines for window replacements in conservation areas are very strict to prohibit changes being made to historic buildings that may diminish their character.

ERG’s sliding sash windows brilliantly replicate the styling and finishes of historic windows, which works in their favour when assessed by planners.

UPVC is more readily accepted as a window material for window upgrades at period homes than it used to be as modern UPVC can be made to look incredibly timber-like.

We’ll consult with your local authority to check they are happy with our authentic sliding sash windows succeeding your old designs before we install them.

Do you provide aftercare for replacement windows?

ERG is here for you long after the completion of your installation.

Our relationship continues with you well after the completion of the replacement window project as the 20-year guarantee given out entitles you to receive aftercare, should you ever need it.

We obviously hope that you don’t experience any issues with your sliding sash windows (most of our customers don’t), but if you do, we’ll quickly be out to your home to resolve whatever has occurred so that they properly function and perform again.

Just call our friendly team to report any fault and a date and time will hastily be arranged for one of our installers to pay a visit.

If you have a general query about your sliding sash windows, again, just get in touch at any point.
