The Lowdown Flush Windows And Casement Windows

The Lowdown Flush Windows And Casement Windows

Unless you work in the home improvement industry or you’ve done your research on windows, you may not understand the difference in these two window styles.

Casement windows and non-flush windows are two different designs that are both incredibly popular with homeowners in Scotland. The fact that ERG Scotland stocks both and one is flush and one isn’t ensures all style preferences are met in our window collection.

A ‘flush’ casement window has sashes that lie flush with the frame, forming a level surface. However, on a standard ‘non-flush’ casement window, the sashes are lipped so they are raised slightly above the frame.

You can explore both window designs in ERG Scotland’s showroom, located in Invergordon.

When did non-flush casement and flush windows originate and what were they made from?

Flush casements can be dated back to over two centuries ago in the 19th century.

You may have noticed that many properties of the late Georgian, Edwardian, and Victorian eras have timber windows.

This is because at this time in history, all windows were made from timber. Therefore, flush windows were originally made from timber.

The UK’s most popular window design, non-flush casements, can be traced back even further to 18th century Britain. These classic windows were originally built from iron by blacksmiths, until timber became the number one material for windows. This was then replaced with UPVC and aluminium.

What has reignited the popularity for flush windows?

Many window companies like us have played a significant role in reviving flush windows. We believe our Envisage flush windows are a great window option for homeowners looking for a slender window that’s minimalistic yet full of character at the same time.

Our Envisage flush windows are made from UPVC, making them more long-lasting and much easier to care for when compared with the original timber style.

Which windows will look most at home on my property?

Flush windows made from UPVC are often selected by home planners based in conservation spaces. This is because they can replicate the traditional styling of the genuine timber windows of the 19th century.

Having said that, with UPVC flush windows, you aren’t just limited to period properties and older style homes. Flush windows can look striking on contemporary homes too.

Standard, non-flush casement windows work well on every property in Scotland, whether you live in a cottage or new build, which is why they are one of our best-selling designs.
