Heritage Windows: What They Are And Why They’re So Popular

Heritage Windows: What They Are And Why They’re So Popular

For homeowners looking to replace the windows in their properties built in the late 19th century or early 20th century, designated as ‘Listed’ or located within a conservation area.

These windows are designed and manufactured using traditional methods so that they are able to replicate the original styling of older homes.

Replacement windows in heritage homes are subject to strict regulations to ensure that they uphold the property’s traditional character and style, and heritage windows often meet these high standards because they do a fantastic job of replicating the older style of windows.

A like-for-like replacement for timber windows

Heritage windows have become a popular choice for homeowners who wish to retain the classic appeal of older timber windows while also taking advantage of modern technological advancements.

In Scotland, many homes feature traditional timber windows that may have deteriorated over time, resulting in reduced strength and increased energy bills due to draughts. Heritage style windows are an excellent solution for replacing these outdated windows while maintaining a traditional aesthetic.

These windows offer exceptional energy efficiency benefits with the added advantage of sturdy UPVC or aluminium frames that are built to last, resulting in reduced heating bills in the long run.

There are multiple types of heritage windows

ERG Scotland offers two types of heritage window. The first is our flush sash window, which is considered the number one heritage style. On a flush sash window, the sashes close into the window frame, forming a compact flat finish.

The second style of window classified as a heritage window is the cottage window. The cottage window’s Georgian bars recreate the look of windows from the Georgian era, a popular time for country cottages.

Although it is a grid pattern placed on one large sheet of glazing, the Georgian bars give the windows a luxurious, expensive feel as they appear to be several individual glass panes.
