How You Can Prepare Your Conservatory For The Summer

We all really look forward to our summer holidays, so it’s a pity that venturing abroad is off the table this year. But let’s look on the bright side. You can always holiday in sunny Scotland, where there are so many places of interest, or just have a ‘homecation’ and take your annual break at your property.

Stone Built Orangery with Tiled Roof

That won’t be a bad idea at all if you have a spacious garden you can enjoy and / or a conservatory.

But what might stop you enabling you to use your conservatory much is the warm weather. Overheating in summer is one of the biggest complaints levelled against old conservatories and it’s the roofing system that’s at fault for that.

There’s a quick and easy fix for that and it’s the installation of a solid replacement roof. The industry’s two most popular solid tiled roofs are sold at ERG – the Guardian Warm Roof and UltraRoof.

Once fitted, all that excess warmth will have gone, and you won’t find the extension to be too cold in winter too.

Your conservatory will be surveyed prior to a solid roof being put in to determine if the current windows and doors have the strength to cope with the addition of a new roof covering. We would replace them anyway if they don’t provide a good standard of thermal insulation.

Don’t completely shut out the weather though. Integrate a French, patio or bi-folding door into some facet of the conservatory that you can open and let a cool breeze in.

This door could also provide you with a direct route into your garden for when you want to dine outside or take in some sunshine.

If the rain stops you from being able to get into the garden, so that it doesn’t aggravate you too much, bring some greenery into your conservatory by adding plants to certain spots.

It was just over 12 months ago that Gardeners’ World Magazine put together their list of the 10 best plants for conservatories, in case you’re wondering which plants to buy:

  • Mandevilla
  • Bougainvillea
  • Hoya
  • Plumbago
  • Sarracenia
  • Lapageria
  • Strelitzia
  • Hymenocallis
  • Aristolochia
  • Cacti and succulents
