How To Ensure That Your Home Is A Secure Place

You cannot afford to be complacent with your home security. If you are, all those treasured possessions you have in your house could one day be gone. Imagine how sickening that would be!

Now that we’ve entered autumn, and daylight hours are reducing, it’s when the threat of burglary is at its highest.

This is why the organisers of National Home Security Month choose to run their annual initiative in October, an apt time to remind homeowners to be on their guard.

ERG can offer three of the best steps you can take to create a more secure home:

Install a burglar alarm

There has to be a correlation between the following two statistics. Firstly, that only a third of UK homes have a burglar alarm, and, secondly, that a home in the UK is burgled every 106 seconds.

When the average burglary totals £3,000, it appears daft not to have a bells-only, dialler, wireless or silent alarm installed as they can be bought and fitted for just £200.

The modern alarm systems on the market don’t miss a trick. They will raise an alert the second they detect a home is under threat.

No more leaving a key out

Lots of householders think nothing of leaving a spare key outside for a friend or family member so that they can get in their home, but it’s a huge and unnecessary risk.

A thief may be watching when you put a key under a plant pot or doormat, and even if they’re not, they will know to look in such places before they attempt anything else.

Getting spare keys cut for those who need one is cheap to do, and a much safer option than leaving one out for anyone to pinch.

Fitting secure windows and doors

If a thief has no luck finding a spare key outside your home, their next move will be to see if they can somehow force open your windows or doors.

You can check their security yourself by locking them and seeing if you feel them moving too much when pushed with a decent amount of force.

Old windows and doors are often quite flimsy, whereas your modern double or triple internally glazed window or door is much more robust, possessing a tough frame and practically immovable locking system, when it’s engaged.
